Philippine Independence Day (2025/06/12)

Philippine Independence Day (Independence Day)

Origin1898year6month12This is the day the Philippines declared independence from Spain.

Legaspi (Miguel López de Legazpi) established the first Spanish colonial government in Cebu. The colonial rule lasted for 333years,
During the Spanish-American War, the United States defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay and Cavite, (Kawi) The Declaration of Independence was made at Aguinaldo Mansion.

During the Spanish colonial period, Catholicism was spread, the education system was established,
and the Philippines was named after the Spanish Crown Prince Felipe.
Even today, most of the population is Catholic. However, economic exploitation,
ethnic discrimination, and suppression of freedom led to the collapse of the country.

The independence movement grew during the century.

For the Filipino people,6month12Independence Day (Araw ng Kalayaan) is a day of great pride and sentimental significance.
Even in regional cities like Ozamiz, where I live, you can see the national flag being raised all over town.
It is not just a ritual, but a sign of the people's patriotism and respect for history.

About the Philippine flag

Blue color Peace, Truth, Justice, Patriotism
Red color Blood shed for courage and patriotism (willingness to fight)
White Triangle Equality and brotherhood
Three Stars The three major regions are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Sun (8 rays) The first eight states to rise up in the revolution
(Manila, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Laguna, Cavite)
As Independence Day approaches, street vendors all over the city are selling flags.
I have bought a national flag for the first time in my 16 years living here.
The larger one is 50 pesos (about $0.52).
The smaller one is 30 pesos (about $0.86)
I see many cars with national flags attached to their radio antennas or side mirrors.

The national flag is also attached to the tricycles used by ordinary people.

Motorcycles are no exception. Many motorcycles are flying with the national flag flying.

If you ride without the national flag on June 12th, Independence Day, you will be subject to police crackdown.
Apparently they have to pay a fine of 100 pesos (about $1.72).
